The local District Council and a team of dedicated volunteers have found a novel location for the new Thirsk Tourism Information Centre: it’s opened in what used to be the town’s public loos.
Government cuts forced the closure of the toilet block and the previous site of the TIC, but some Thirsk residents felt so strongly about the importance of encouraging tourism in the area that (with the help of a local authority grant) they decided to put to good use the vacant loos in the town centre.
The old toilet block was a very fine building, and the change has ensured that it will be put to good use for many years to come.
A team of 27 volunteers now work at the revamped TIC, and they’re rightly proud of their new working environment, describing it as one of the best TICs in the country.
And, for those who need to spend a penny when visiting the market town, there are still public toilet facilities at other locations in Thirsk.
