Following a highly successful run in Ipswich and London in 2010, Graeae and the New Wolsey Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL has hit the road for a marathon 1633 mile national tour including dates at Hull Truck Theatre.

Written by Paul Sirett with the Artistic Director of Graeae, Jenny Sealey, directing, this lively performance (part gig, part play) about coming of age in the late 70s celebrates Ian Dury and the Blockheads’ infectious music. Classic tracks featured include “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll”; “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick”; “Sweet Gene Vincent”; “Spasticus Autisticus”; “Plaistow Patricia”; and of course, “Reasons to be Cheerful”.
Ian Dury was the “original disabled activist & musician” and as such was a great promoter, patron and loyal supporter of Graeae. The intelligence and wit of Dury’s lyrics are magnificently brought to life by the cast of 13 actors and musicians in this gritty production.

‘A masterpiece!’ Chaz Jankel – The Blockheads
The production is set in 1979 amidst national strikes, Margaret Thatcher coming to power and Dury’s “Reasons to be Cheerful (Part 3)” reaching Number 3 in the UK charts. Central character Vinnie, a die-hard Blockheads fan, desperately wants to see the band with his friends at the Hammersmith Odeon but the gig has long since sold out. Life, however, will often throw up unexpected opportunities, and Vinnie’s night frustrating night soon becomes something else completely…

‘Took me right back. Brilliant!’ Suggs – Madness
