21-23 August: Whitby Regatta 2010

The Whitby Regatta is a three -day celebration of Whitby’s past and present. Although nautical events feature prominently over the three days, there are many other major activities and there’s entertainment for everyone.

The event can trace its origins to at least 170 years ago, but this year’s event will be bang up to date and will feature displays by the Army, the Royal Navy and the RAF’s crack Red Arrows team. Other events include a 4 km fun run, yacht races, rowing races, a firework display and much more.

Here’s a list of some of what’s happening (it’s quite amazing that so much has been packed into just three days):

Fun for Children of All Ages
A wide selection of entertainment for children including: an inflatable Maze/Pirate Ship/Giant Fun Slide, a Punch and

Judy Show, and Jo Jo the Clown

Rowing Races
Local rowing teams compete in various categories

RAF Displays
Static displays including a recruitment display

Navy Displays
A submarine trailer and display

Army Displays
A range of displays to explore

Motor Cycle Gymkhana
Skill and fun on two wheels taking place on the beach

Sunday 22 August at 10 am The Whitby Regatta 4K Fun Run
This starts from Crescent Gardens and is run predominantly on the sea wall (application form needed – available in Word format from the Regatta website by clicking here)

Sunday 22 August Vintage, Post war, Classic & Sports Car Rally
Many elegant cars will compete in various classes for prestigious trophies (application form needed – available in Word format from the Regatta website by clicking here)

Monday 23 August – The Grand Parade
A parade of many decorated themed floats will make its way through the heart of the Regatta celebrations.

Monday 23 August – Spectacular Fireworks Display
Barrage after barrage of rockets, star bursts, special effect shells, whistling mullet coloured rockets and numerous other different fireworks, are the theme of this years’ firework finale.

So there’s tons to do and see, and all happening in probably the nation’s finest seaside resort.
