The Richmondshire Museum

Hidden away in a quiet cobbled wynd behind the market square is Richmond’s best kept secret: the Richmondshire Museum. For over thirty years this intriguing museum has collected together the fascinating historic remnants of both Richmond town and Richmondshire, the countryside and dales surrounding the town. Were Richmondshire a county this little gem would be the county museum!

With six galleries, a restored cruck house and a recreated mid-nineteenth century grocers shop the Museum is still expanding and will soon open an ironmongers shop and also an interactive ‘Discovery centre’ themed on an old painting showing Richmond town centre in the nineteenth century.

The Museum has something to interest everyone young and old, and display items range from the prehistoric right up to memorabilia from the twentieth century (reflecting that we all like to indulge in a bit of nostalgia from time to time) – from James Herriot’s surgery to the ‘old hoss’ who gallivants around Richmondshire at Christmas time.

And when you’ve finished enjoying your visit, call in at the souvenir shop so you can capture the experience with a gift or memento. And do visit the Museum’s website to find out about any special events taking place and their programme of workshops and lectures.

The Museum is open all day every day from the end of March to the end of October. There’s access for wheelchairs throughout, and a lift to all floors.
