If you’re thinking of visiting Knaresborough then be prepared and before you set off download an audio tour of its fine Castle.

You might think that it’s a strange thing for something as steeped in history as Knaresborough Castle to have its very own digital download but it makes good sense.

What you’ll get is a series of MP3s or an iPhone App which, when you’ve uploaded them to your MP3 player or iPhone, will tell you about each part of the Castle and something of its history. And of course, you can pause at any time or rewind to listen again to any part of the audio tour.

There’s a version suitable for children and one for adults – the adult one has 10 chapters, each telling about a different part of the Castle. It also includes interviews with archaeologists and a historian. The children’s one is called a “Time Shifter Tour” and the aim is to get their imaginations working to the max through an adventure featuring a character called Jack who has a quest to return to medieval times via a bit of time travel. This one lasts 25 minutes and has 9 chapters.

You can download these audio tours from Harrogate Borough Council’s website. Both MP3s and iPhone/iPod versions are completely free (download AudioGuide2Go free from the AppStore).
