Constable Burton Hall Gardens

On the Wensleydale border stands a handsome Villa, Constable Burton Hall. It was built in 1768 for Sir Marmaduke Wyvill and was designed by John Carr, the famous architect. It is one of the finest medium-sized, English, Palladian style, houses built. The Hall is still owned and run today by the Wyvill family, who have an unbroken male line stretching back to Sir Humphrey de Wyvill who, in 1066, served with William the Conqueror.

Standing in formal gardens and extensive woodland, both open from mid-March to mid-September to the public. The Hall itself is only open for special tours by private arrangement with the Wyvill family.

Constable Burton Hall is conveniently placed on the A684 between Bedale and Leyburn (8 miles west of the A1) and is the perfect place to stop and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of these delightful grounds, terraced woodland garden of roses, ferns, lilies and wildflowers.

Due to its stunning backdrop, it has been a very popular film location choice for TV series and documentaries including: ‘Heartbeat’, ‘All Creatures Great & Small’, ‘Ladette to Lady’ and ‘Gardeners World’ and has gained excellent coverage in magazines such as ‘The Lady’ and ‘Country Life’ etc. It’s well worth a visit.
