Esk Valley Railway

The Esk Valley railway runs some 36 miles between the historic port of Whitby on the Yorkshire Coast, to the lively, modern city of Middlesbrough with its vast range of shops, museums and galleries, plus a wealth of visitor attractions.

Winding through the stunning countryside of the North York Moors National Park as it follows the river Esk through beautiful, green valleys, the Esk Valley line takes in a host of charming, picturesque villages, including Danby, home to the Moors Visitor Centre and Grosmont, where it connects to the North York Moors Railway steam train network.

The Esk Valley Railway is ideal for walkers and cyclists, connecting to many of the hiking and biking routes throughout the area, including The Esk Valley Walk, The Cleveland Way and the Moors to Sea Cycle network. Cyclists can take their bikes on the train free of charge.
