Hawes
Come and visit this fully restored 19th Century Victorian state-of-the-art three storey Sawmill in the lovely market town of Hawes, Wensleydale, the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.
Gayle Mill was lovingly restored back in 2008 and was saved from total dereliction. It featured on the BBC’s series of “Restoration” and “Look North”, and Channel 4’s “How Britain Worked”. Water is the driving power of the Mill, originally (in 1784) spinning raw cotton which in 1879 turned to a working Saw Mill. The water-powered turbines and Victorian machinery have been fully restored to their former glory and so for any engineering enthusiasts, this is a must see. The Mill also ‘did its bit’ for the war effort, as during World War II it accommodated many military personnel.
This Mill generates its own electricity, runs as a teaching and training venue, produces timber and wood products such as benches, gates and fencing, kitchen items etc., supplies firewood and even hires out its own mobile sawmill so has full circle become once again industrious. Gayle Mill has also become a hugely popular visitor attraction in the Yorkshire Dales since reopening back in 2008.
Educational visits are most welcome. Guided tours and hands-on activities are made available too.
