Walter 'The Woodpecker' Espec built the first castle at Helmsley in the early twelfth Century he also founded Kirkham Priory and Rievaulx Abbey, which both lie nearby. Added to by successive generations, the castle was remodelled into a luxurious manor house during the Elizabethan period.
The interesting story of Helmsley Castle is told through an imaginative hands-on exhibition in the mansion range, exploring the domestic and social aspects of the fortress, as well as the military. The fearsome earthworks and towering keep continue to fuel the imaginations of visitors to the site. Helmsley Castle is the ideal location to learn more about the fascinating history of the region.
