The remarkably well preserved ruin of a 14th Century Cathusian monastery with museum, set against the back drop of the North York Moors and the popular Cleveland Way National Trail
Mount Grace Priory is the most fantastically preserved British charterhouse (a monastery or priory for Carthusian monks), one of only ten in the country. The monks of Mount Grace lived like hermits in individual cottage-like cells, until the Priory was ruined during the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. A reconstruction of a furnished monk's cell, as well as a recently restored herb plot, provide a window into the lives of the monastery's medieval residents. The priory is located in a beautiful setting - and its gardens are a haven for a wide variety of wildlife, including its very own 'Priory Stoats'.
The site plays host to art exhibitions all year round, including a recent display of beautiful landscapes captured by renowned photographer, Joe Cornish. In the summer months, Mount Grace Priory hosts a season of spectacular outdoor theatre, from A Midsummer Night's Dream to Peter Pan.
