Nr. Helmsley
Discover more than 800 years of history in the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful monastic ruin
Over eight centuries ago St Aelred, the monastery's third abbot, wrote 'Everywhere peace, everywhere serenity, and a marvellous freedom from the tumult of the world.' Those words still portray Rievaulx today. Set in a tranquil and beautiful valley, it is among the most complete and atmospheric of all the abbey ruins in the north.
Explore the towering abbey ruins, then discover the history of Rievaulx in the indoor interactive exhibition entitled 'The Work of God and Man'. Afterwards, you can relax in the tearoom, enjoying some of the delicious dishes made only with the finest local Yorkshire produce.
But Rievaulx isn't just about the past - during the summer, Rievaulx Abbey has a full programme of events for people of all ages, from Medieval Monastic Fun to Have-a-go Archery. Serenity Saturdays have returned, back by popular demand, where you can treat yourself to a blissful massage or try your hand at the ancient art of Tai Chi. Please see the Rievaulx Abbey website for more details.
