World of James Herriot

Thirsk

Travel back in time to the 1940s and enjoy a fantastic family fun day out. Visit the World of James Herriot, famous Vet and author at the original home and surgery at 23 Kirkgate, Thirsk, North Yorkshire – re-known world-wide as “Herriot Country.”

Step in to North Yorkshire’s premier visitor attraction – the World of James Herriot, located in the centre of the popular Market Town of Thirsk and be ready to travel back to “the roaring forties”.

No 23 Kirkgate, Thirsk was the world’s most famous Vet, James Herriot’s original home as well as being his place of work. The living quarters and Veterinary Surgery have been recreated to appear as it was back in the 1940s. Whatever the weather, this promises to be a day full of fun for all the family – and it’s highly educational too!

See TV sets from ‘All Creatures Great and Small’, explore the children’s interactive gallery and enjoy three rooms dedicated to the history of veterinary medicine. The original car that James Herriot drove back in those days is on show too. The new World War II Air Raid Shelter offers you the experience of imagining what it must have been like to have had to hide away in hopeful safety during the air raids.

You can even “virtually” visit the World of James Herriot right from the palm of your hand – visit the website and download the FREE James Herriot App. From this you can book accommodation, explore all the places mentioned in the series of James Herriot books, find out how to get here, find places to eat out and much more.

The World of James Herriot is a recent winner of “The Yorkshire Rural Tourism Award.”
