York Castle Museum

York

One of York’s true and magnificent visitor attractions, located in the heart of the historic City of York in North Yorkshire, the famous York Castle Museum is a ‘must visit’ for all who wish to take a trip down Memory Lane.

With its famous recreated Victorian street, combining real stock and shop fittings with light and sound effects, evoking a Victorian Britain atmosphere perfectly, York Castle Museum displays thousands of household objects - settings include an 1850s Moorland cottage, Georgian and Jacobean dining rooms, a new 1960s gallery, a 1950s living room and 1940s kitchen.

Our special exhibitions include “Kirkgate” – our world-famous Victorian Street which has recently become extended, now featuring new back streets, a poverty stricken area, authentic business properties and thousands of genuine Victorian objects to view. This street even has its very own website and was originally built back in 1938 by Museum founder John Kirk. It is the oldest recreated street of all British Museums and has been charming visitors to York for nearly 80 years with its recreated shops, houses, businesses (such as candlemakers) and the famous Victorian cobbled street and large, luxurious Hansom Cab.

Other fantastic exhibitions include ‘York Castle Prison’, ‘The Sixties’, ‘Dark History’ (First World War exhibits), ‘Cradle to Grave’ (birth, marriage and death), ‘Seeing it Through’ (Second World War) and much more.
