Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Forces Memorial

The Yorkshire Air Museum is the largest independent Museum in the UK and is set in 20 acres of parkland and is the most original WWII RAF Bomber Command Station open to the public.

Our fantastic Aircraft exhibits cover the history of aviation from the birth of manned flight with the Cayley Glider, Wright Flyer, Blackburn Mercury Monoplane through the First World War with the Avro 504, BE.2c and the now 'live' SE5a, to WWII with the unique restored Halifax Mk. III "Friday the 13th", De Havilland Mosquito Nightfighter, and the now 'live' Douglas C47 / DC3 Dakota. Post war aircraft include the De Havilland Devon, now also live, plus historic names such as Meteor, Lightning, Hunter, Harrier, Buccaneer  and on to the supersonic age with the French Mirage Mk. III, the only one of its kind on display in Britain, honouring Elvington's wartime French Squadron's, plus the Tornado GR1 and GR4, still in service today. Another major attraction is the "Mighty Hunter" Nimrod MR2 XV250, which flew in to Elvington on April 13th 2010 after 40 years service with the RAF. This rarely seen aircraft is  kept in ground operational condition, along with the other big jets illustrated, the Handley Page Victor  V-Force bomber / tanker XL231 and Yorkshire built Blackburn Buccaneer XN 974, which take part in our event programme.

Our 'Pioneers of Aviation' Exhibition, housed in its own building includes information on famous people including Sir George Cayley (Father of Aeronautics), Amy Johnson from Hull (first female to fly solo to Russia and Australia), Nevil Shute (author and engineer) and Sir Barnes Wallis (famous for his  Dambusters Bouncing Bomb, the Wellington Bomber and R100 Airship). 'Against the Odds' tells the story of RAF Bomber Command, along with many other exhibition Rooms including the Air Gunners Memorial Room and 77 Squadron and 609 Squadron Rooms.

The Museum is also home to the Allied Air Forces Memorial which commemorates the sacrifices and achievements of all allied men and women, situated on the largest and original wartime RAF Bomber Command Station.
