Yorkshire Museum of Farming

York

For a great family day out, come and explore the Yorkshire Museum of Farming at Murton near the historic City of York. Learn about the history of farming and have fun.

Located within a 16 acre site close to the famous and historic City of York, the Yorkshire Museum of Farming houses an excellent collection of regional, historic farming equipment which can be viewed within two different buildings. The story of a year on the farm, from winter ploughing right through to autumn harvest, is told within the Four Seasons Gallery. The Livestock Gallery teaches about animal rearing and their produce. Both Galleries have many interesting, interactive features which will keep our younger visitors entertained.

Learn how different breeds of farm livestock and crops were introduced. Explore how our Victorian ancestors lived day to day, cooking and cleaning. Many of our seasonal events demonstrate and celebrate customs such as the making of corn dollies to celebrate the harvest, ploughing matches and much more.

A Celebration of the Women’s Land Army exhibition ‘Feeding the Nation’ is a ‘must visit’.

The Yorkshire Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers are based on site, and the Yorkshire & District Beekeepers Association have their Apiary and Pavilion on site too, so two extra attractions to visit whilst at the Museum.

The Museum is conveniently located near the A64 (York By-pass). Follow brown tourism signs for ‘Yorkshire Museum of Farming’. Buses run from York Railway Station (see website for further info).
