Although Grassington is often described as a village, it is in fact a market town - it was granted its charter in 1282, but it retains all the charm and character of a typical Dales village and is becoming increasingly popular as a holiday base.
It is at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and lies on the Dales Way - an 80-miles-long walkers path which goes from Bowness-in-Windermere to Ilkley. It is also one of the towns and villages on the Dales Cycle Way - a circular trail of 130 miles.

At the centre of Grassington you'll find a market square with some excellent shops supplying local foods and gifts. You can learn about the heritage of Grassington and the surrounding area at the Upper Wharfedale Folk Museum in the market square.
Grassington has a tremendous historical and archaeological heritage - and you don't have to wander very far from the village to find the remains of medieval farmsteads, Roman settlements, and Bronze Age burial mounds.
Interesting fact: 250 years ago, living in Grassington was a bit like living in the wild west. It was a boom town as a result of lead-mining and the miners had a reputation for being somewhat rough - as a result the police in Grassington were the first in the country to be armed.
